Masscribes had a presence on the field yesterday,

Masscribes had a presence on the field yesterday, amongst artisans and craftsmen, at the Sudbury Colonial Faire, on the beautiful grounds of the historic Wayside Inn. Our own Dave Flattery manned the information table, putting out word that our organization exists and can be found online. He spoke with a good number of event attendees who were curious about calligraphy and lettering. Children left our table happy, with bookmarks that Dave hand lettered with their names. Giving them the chance to watch a calligrapher live in action was very rewarding. (It was well with the work of setting up the tent in the middle of fall morning wind gusts.)

My favorite line of all Kahlil Gibran’s writing in The Prophet:

Written here to provide a sample of my Chancery Italic for an upcoming class. ...As they say, if you want to get better at something — teach it. (Somehow, I think there’s a very good chance my students may leave the class with better Italic than my own.😉) I will forever be working to improve this hand, but I feel it is very important — especially nowadays, with “modern calligraphy” being all the rage, to teach this and other traditional hands.

A very special project has finally reached completion, left the studio, and been hand delivered to its home in the beautiful woods of Connecticut. This original design of “Saint Patrick’s Breastplate” was commissioned over a year ago as a gift for a fine gentleman who was ordained as a deacon yesterday. I am honored and delighted to have been trusted with the creation of such a special and meaningful gift. Knowing that a piece of my work that was rendered with the utmost love and care will hang in the home of and be appreciated by such wonderful people is all the reward for which an artist can ask.

Ready for the frame. I created this for the Masscribes “Words of New England” show which will be going up at the Moakley Courthouse in Boston next week. I have been an artist with a passion for letters for over 30 years. I believe that one of the main struggles an artist faces is valuing their art and the impact it has on others. Comparison and self-doubt often keep us from sharing what we create. This quote is an encouragement to trust yourself and be willing to share your gifts no matter what they are. The words in the main message of the piece were gilded in 24K gold leaf to communicate that what you have to give is of great value.
